That’s it until Christmas … what other bank holidays are there?

A bank holiday is a national public holiday in the UK and the Crown Dependencies, and in the Republic of Ireland.

They were first introduced by banker, politician and scientific writer Sir John Lubbock, who drafted the Bank Holiday Act in 1871 – which was repealed and replaced by the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971.

The August bank holiday isn’t quite the last BH in 2024.

Below are the bank holidays that those living in England and Wales can look forward to in 2024:

• December 25, 2024 – Christmas Day
• December 26, 2024 – Boxing Day

Opening hours for Sainsbury’s

Many Sainsbury’s stores will be open at the usual hours across the bank holiday weekend, with larger stores shortening their hours on Monday.

Is the Post Office open today?

Main Post Offices will close on the bank holiday, but local branches will remain open if the retail business is open.

However, many small shops that house a Post Office will close early on a bank holiday, to allow staff the chance to enjoy some well earned time off.

Always check with the store, so you won’t be caught out by an early closure.

Opening hours on the weekend before the bank holiday will remain the same, with many local branches open on a Sunday.

Waitrose opening hours

Most Waitrose & Partners shops will trade normal hours, although some Little Waitrose shops will open between 7am and 10pm.

Check with individual stores before heading out to shop.

What about Asda?

In general, stores will be open from 6am to 12am, with some open 24 hours.

Tesco opening hours
