Amad Diallo was the hero as Manchester United secured the bragging rights over Manchester City in a dramatic Manchester derby on Sunday.
City were leading all the way up until the 88th minute after a first-half goal from Josko Gvardiol before Diallo won a late penalty for his side, going down after a challenge from Matheus Nunes.
Bruno Fernandes scored from the spot and Diallo then popped up two minutes later – right at the death – to secure a 2-1 victory and all three points for Ruben Amorim’s men.
That goal sparked wild scenes in the away end at the Etihad while the home crowd was shocked into silence after another blow to their Premier League title hopes.
The result has moved United up to 12th in the Premier League table while City are fifth – three points behind Arsenal, four points behind Chelsea and nine points behind leaders Liverpool.

That could be Man City well and truly out of the Premier League title race now…
They’ll be 12 points behind Liverpool if Arne Slot’s men win their game in hand.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, speaking to Sky Sports about Amad Diallo: ‘He has been doing well, he has been doing great things and there is a still a lot to come from him.
‘He showed again today he is always alive. That is why he gets the penalty, why he gets the goal. He has been brilliant. When he is like this he is unstoppable.
‘I just want him to keep working, that is what he has been doing. It is great what he did today but I am sure he can do this every week. We want this week in, week out. He is now getting his chances, deservedly.’
Football pundit Leon Osman told the BBC: ‘Both sides had not done enough until the final five minutes to win the game, but you thought Manchester City would hold on to get over the line. But as is typical at the moment, a sloppy pass changed the game for City.
‘Amad Diallo was aware of the potential of a bad pass and got into a good position to win the penalty. Then you thought it was going to be a draw, but Manchester United became more and more positive towards the end of the game.
‘It’s a big result for United and a disastrous one for City. But United won’t care!’
Manchester City have lost a home game after leading at half time in the Premier League for the first time since 8th May 2021 against Chelsea (44 games without defeat).
Incredible scenes here at the Etihad. Man City were leading 1-0 until the 88th minute!
Amad Diallo is the hero for the Red Devils. He won the penalty for Bruno Fernandes to pull one back before levelling it up himself in the 90th minute. Brilliant ending to this!
AMAD DIALLO!!!! MAN UTD HAVE TURNED IT AROUND IN ADDED TIME!!
Bruno Fernandes scores his spot kick in the 88th minute! Man Utd are level!
PENALTY TO MAN UTD! Amad is wiped out by Nunes inside the box.
10 minutes of normal time to play here and both managers are rolling the dice.
Grealish comes on for City, replacing Doku.
Man Utd make three changes as Hojlund, Mazraoui and De Ligt make way for Zirkzee, Antony and Yoro.
Huge chance for Bruno Fernandes just now but he somehow misses the target with only the goalkeeper to beat. Poor.
Brilliant ball from Hojlund to set it up, though.
‘That was Manchester United’s best chance by a mile,’ Gary Neville said on Sky Sports.
Chance for De Bruyne to double City’s lead but his shot goes over the crossbar. Guardiola is now taking him off to be replaced by Kovacic.
Man Utd want a penalty as Dias hacks down Hojlund inside the box… but nothing is given by the referee or VAR after a quick look.
Former top-flight referee Mike Dean, on commentary duties for Sky Sports, is adamant that the correct decision was made. No penalty.
‘I thought it was a natural coming together,’ Dean said. ‘I don’t think that’s enough in a game like this.’
Premier League Match Centre posted on X: ‘The referee’s call of no penalty for the challenge between Højlund and Dias was checked and confirmed by VAR, deeming it was normal contact.’
Finally… a chance in the second half! Amad aims for the bottom corner and Ederson is forced to flick it away with a smart save.
That was Man Utd’s first shot on goal of the match.
Here’s how the stats are looking as we hit the hour mark…
It’s like a game of Soccer Aid at the moment. Both teams playing safe, backwards football. It’s not a good watch for the neutral.
Not much to report across the opening 10 minutes of the second half. It’s been so flat, with no chances for either team. Need a spark here.
‘Forget Manchester Derby, this has been the Donkey Derby!’ Gary Neville told Sky Sports. ‘It’s been far from pretty.
‘This is a really tough job [for Amorim]. The players are nowhere near the level expected or needed.’
The second half has just started here at the Etihad. Man Utd trail 1-0 and are looking to get back in this game.
