Africa’s best holiday resort has been revealed with 24C temperatures and costing £144 a night

Tripadvisor’s number one resort in Africa has been named as the beachfront hotel of Lux Belle Mare in Mauritius, an island just east of Madagascar.

It describes itself as a “spirited, forward-thinking luxury hotel…where minimal and tropical come together magically” for guests.

Lux Belle Mare has a five-star rating on Tripadvisor and won a Traveller’s Choice Award in 2024, given to those who consistently rank highly on the site.

The hotel is frequently lauded by guests for its “spacious and well-appointed” rooms, as well as the clean beaches and facilities, which contribute to the “elegant and welcoming atmosphere” that many find “enchanting”.

It has a number of bars and restaurants to enjoy, various types of rooms to stay in, wellness spaces such as a spa and aqua therapy, and a teen club

Mautirus includes the main island as well as Rodrigues, Agaléga, and St. Brandon. The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues, along with nearby Réunion (a French overseas department), are part of the Mascarene Islands.

Endemic animals, such as the echo parakeet, the Mauritius kestrel and the pink pigeon, have survived and are subject to intensive and successful ongoing conservation efforts.

The environment is typically tropical in the coastal regions with forests in the mountainous areas. Seasonal cyclones are destructive to its flora and fauna, although they recover quickly. Mauritius ranked second in an air quality index released by the World Health Organization in 2011.

There are two seasons: a warm humid summer from November to April, with a mean temperature of 25C, and a relatively cool dry winter from June to September with a mean temperature of 21C.
