As the weeks roll on with no sign of Kerr Kriisa returning, it becomes more and more unlikely that he will play again this season.
The good news is the Kentucky Wildcats point guard could likely return for the 2025-26 college basketball season thanks to a medical redshirt.
Now, head coach Mark Pope has acknowledged that a medical redshirt is in the cards for Kriisa, though he is still hopeful of playing again this season.
“That is a possibility,” Pope said of Kriisa possibly taking a medical redshirt on his Monday radio show. “Right now, he’s anxiously trying to get back into this thing, and the recovery has probably been a little slower than any of us would like.”
Kriisa has only played in nine games for the Wildcats this season. He suffered a foot injury on December 7th vs. Gonzaga, which later required surgery. The initial timeframe for recovery was 3-to-6 weeks, which we’re obviously way past now.
You have to wonder if Kriisa has already decided he wants to sit out the rest of the season so he can easily get a medical redshirt and play one more full season of college basketball. If he were to return at any point this season, it would hurt his chances of getting a waiver for next year.
Can’t really blame him if that’s the case.
