It’s going to be a Happy Reused Christmas for 42% of UK adults. It appears those 23 million gift-givers plan to wrap up at lease one “used” gift this festive period, according to new research commissioned by MPB.
This figure’s up two percentage points year-on-year and marks for a “significant” increase on the 26% who planned to do the same as recently as Christmas 2020.
MPB’s fifth annual poll reveals that Millennials (aged 25–34) are driving the used revolution, with 59% planning to buy at least one used gift for Christmas this year.
Those planning on giving used can rest assured that their gifts will be well received, as 63% of UK respondents “would be happy to receive a used gift that’s in good condition”.
This reflects a significant jump from 45% who said the same in 2020, “demonstrating the growing emphasis consumers are placing on sustainability”.
Indeed, 44% said they would prefer a used gift where appropriate, rather than something new.
Matt Barker, founder and CEO of MPB, said: “More people are planning to gift used this year, driven by growing environmental awareness and ongoing cost-of-living pressures.
“By participating in the circular economy, shoppers can save money, extend product lifespans, and reduce their environmental impact. While many are already embracing this approach, a significant number of UK adults remain unaware of its benefits. We encourage them to consider gifting used items as a more thoughtful, sustainable choice.”
