Renowned wrestling entertainment behemoth WWE is set to bring its premiere extravaganza, WrestleMania, to the shores of the UK for the first time.
In a potential game-changer for UK wrestling fans, WrestleMania could be hitting the UK scene following an unexpected meeting between London Mayor Sadiq Khan and WWE legend Triple H earlier this week. It would be the first ever time the event has been hosted outside of America.
London’s top politician, Sadiq Khan, confirmed the talks with the wrestling supremo, expressing his enthusiasm: “I am delighted to have met with WWE Hall of Famer Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque and WWE President Nick Khan today to discuss how we can work to make London WrestleMania’s first international destination.”
At 54, Triple H, a world-renowned wrestler-turned-corporate executive, shared the keen anticipation for taking what’s dubbed as the “show of shows” to London, noting the enthusiasm was “palpable.”
Should the plan go ahead, it would mark a monumental victory for Khan, who has been vocal about attracting more global sports spectacles to London since announcing his intentions in April, endeavoring to bolster the citys sporting event portfolio. Seemingly inspired by Khan’s initiative, Triple H, intrigued by the media coverage, reportedly reached out directly to start the conversation, reports the Daily Star.
Sadiq Khan joined forces with WWE President Nick Khan and Chief Content Officer Levesque at City Hall to plot the strategy to land WrestleMania in London.
Khan added: “London has great pedigree in hosting the biggest international sporting events from around the globe and I’m determined to cement our city’s reputation as the undisputed sports capital of the world, as we work together for a better London for everyone.
“It’s exciting to be working with the WWE team. The meeting was really productive, and talks will continue about how we could turn our ambition into a reality.”
There’s not yet a fixed date for the grand wrestling extravaganza WrestleMania, renowned for drawing crowds by the hundreds of thousands over two thrilling nights and presenting UK fans with a chance to witness the spectacle and prowess of the worlds best professional wrestlers right on their doorstep.
In a strong endorsement, WWE President Nick Khan has stated: “Sadiq Khan and his team are working hard on positioning London as a sport and entertainment capital of Europe and it has been great to hear more on his vision for how WWE can support them on that journey.”
He highlighted WrestleMania’s immense economic clout by elucidating that “WrestleMania has delivered more than $1.25 billion in economic impact for its host cities, with this year’s event in Philadelphia attracting over 145,000 fans from 64 countries. There is a lot that needs to be discussed further but we share the ambition of Mayor Khan in trying to bring a stand-out WWE Premium Live event to London.”
Adding his voice to the excitement, Levesque remarked: “WWE and London have a long and successful history dating back many decades, and meeting with Sadiq Khan to discuss what the future of this partnership could bring has been excellent. This year alone WWE has taken record-breaking events around the world to Australia, France, Scotland, Saudi Arabia and Canada the appetite from the fans is there, and the excitement from the Mayor and his team in London is palpable.”
