The world’s most tedious tourist attractions have been unveiled, with two iconic UK spots making the ‘yawn list’. The list was compiled by Solitaired, who analysed over 3,200 attractions using 66.7 million Google reviews across 384 cities.
They ranked the attractions based on how often tourists mentioned boredom-related keywords in their reviews.
Topping the list as the most boring attraction is the Branson Scenic Railway in Branson, Missouri, USA, followed by the Illuminarium in Atlanta, Georgia. The Jurassic Jungle Boat Ride in Tennessee also made the US-dominated list, along with the Salem Witch Museum in Salem and the LEGO Discovery Centre in Atlanta.
Two more American attractions followed the Adler Planetarium in Chicago and the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa, Florida before the first UK-based attraction appeared. Shrek’s London adventure came in at number eight with a boredom score of 2.9 out of five, earning it the title of the UK’s most boring tourist attraction.
Just four places lower at number 12 is the London Dungeon, which scored a boredom rating of 2.6. The only other UK attraction to make the top 100 was Twycross Zoo in Warwickshire.
Recent feedback on the Shrek attraction seems to align with the list, as a review from December 2023 is titled “a bit dull and repetitive” on Tripadvisor.
The reviewer wrote: “Went with a seven-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy. Girl had a great time but the rest of us in the party thought it very boring. Too much waiting around at the start for a photo that you are ‘prompted’ to buy.”
“This caused a huge bottle neck in a very small space. Felt very outdated. There are better attractions (including the London dungeon next door) to spend your money on. Was the only thing I wish I hadn’t wasted my money on during our whole weekend in London.”
Despite the advice from the review, a recent London Dungeon review also matches up with the boring list, as it was described as “really boring”.
A review posted: “I found this to be extremely boring the waiting in the queues between each quite poorly acted scenario was extreme. My son had been so looking forward to the experience and was almost afraid to tell me how poor he thought it was.”
“There were no real thrills or excitement just a series of walks through a dark tunnel with no information about where we were and then long waits without being told why. I cannot honestly recommend this to anybody to spend two hours at a time for so much money it would be better to go to a London theatre and be properly entertained.”
