Newcastle upon Tyne ultimately topped the list, with Worcester coming in fourth-place.
The recent study was conducted by Betsson analysed search trends across all major sports to discover which cities had the highest level of interest.
Searching trends were analysed across the 90 most populated cities and towns in the UK to see how many searches there were related to the major sports of football, basketball, rugby, tennis, cricket and golf.
The locations were then ranked based upon searches per 10,000 residents.

The city received the lowest level of searches for football per 10,000 residents in the top ten however a high level of interest in rugby and the highest interest in cricket observed in the top ten propelled it to its high position.
Overall there were 4112 searches for football-related key words for every 10,000 residents in Worcester, 9.84 searches for basketball, 191.82 searches for rugby, 4.92 searches for tennis, 59.02 searches for golf and 516.43 searches for cricket.
Elsewhere in the list Birmingham finished in joint-ninth position, London finished 47th and Nottingham was named the city least interested in sport.
