Amarni Banks moves on to the second round of qualifying after an impressive comeback against a multiple Grand Slam doubles champion, where she’ll be joined by Hannah Klugman and Sonay Kartal on a strong day for the Brits.
Wild card Banks trailed by a set and a break before claiming a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Kristina Mladenovic.
Banks hit 13 winners in the deciding set as she wrapped up the match with a double break. Next up she’ll play American Kayla Day.
15-year-old Klugman was one of the stars of the day at the Community Sport Centre, Roehampton as she knocked out Croatia’s Petra Marcinko 6-2, 6-2 in just 56 minutes.
Klugman – supported by our Pro Scholarship Programme presented by Lexus – lost just four points on her first serve in a dominant victory. She’ll play either Linda Fruhvirtova or Priscilla Hon next.
Kartal – who featured in the main draw over the past two seasons – is a step closer to a return to SW19 after she beat world No.137 Suzan Lamens 7-6(6), 6-4.
A quarter-finalist at the Lexus Ilkley Trophy last week, Kartal will look to continue her solid form against China’s Sija Wei in the next round.
Emily Appleton was the first British woman to exit Wimbledon qualifying as she lost out to France’s Elsa Jacquemot 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 50 minutes.
Appleton got off to a flying start – opening with a 4-0 lead before taking the set, but Jacquemot’s consistency proved tough for the Brit to break down. The world No.151 hit only 16 unforced errors to the Brit’s 33 and having forced the decider – broke Appleton on a pressure service game at 5-4 in the third.
Katy Dunne was defeated by 29-year-old Croatian Tena Lukas in a nail-biting clash 6-7(6), 6-4, 7-6(10-8).
The Briton saved match point with Lukas serving for the match at 5-4 in the third and went on to take an 8-5 lead in the match tie-break. However, Dunne was unable to push it over the line and a spirited performance from Tena saw her win the last five straight points.
After her first WTA main draw last week, Amelia Rajecki lost out to Australian Arina Rodionova 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Teenagers Mika Stojsavljevic and Mimi Xu also went out in the opening round. Stojsavljevic was beaten by Selena Janicijevic 6-3, 6-4, while Xu lost against Ipek Oz 6-4, 6-4.
