American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez tackles a dramatic retelling of one of the most historic rises and well-publicised downfalls in American sporting history. The true-crime series is produced by Ryan Murphy, the same name behind the hugely popular American Horror Story TV franchise and more recently, Netflix’s stand-alone Monsters series.
The latest instalment of the latter has recently hit the streamer, with Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story glueing eyeballs to screens in a similar fashion to the Jeffrey Dahmer series that preceded it. That one featured Murphy’s American Horror Story good-luck charm Evan Peters in the lead role and wasted no time becoming a viral watercooler hit.
However, with American Sports Story, Murphy, along with series creator Stu Zicherman, takes on a whole new world of entertainment and drama but much like his other work, it’s a tale with darkness at its core. Intrigued? Read on to find out when you can watch American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez in the UK.
Aaron Hernandez was a young American football player who rose up the ranks to become a tight end for the New England Patriots in America’s National Football League (NFL). His formidable approach to the sport with his teammate Rob Gronkowski made the duo among the most feared players on the field.
However, Hernandez’s personal life was littered with darkness, something which was impacted, in part, by his troubled upbringing. Unfortunately, things came to a tragic head when he was arrested and charged with the murder of Odin Lloyd, a semi-professional football player who was dating his fiancée’s sister.
Hernandez was ultimately found guilty in 2015 and sentenced to life in prison without parole but in 2017 was found dead in his cell while awaiting trial for another homicide.
In American Sports Story, Hernandez is played by West Side Story star Josh Andrés Rivera and joined by an ensemble cast that includes Patrick Schwarzenegger, Jaylen Barron, Lindsay Mendez and more.
American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez debuted on FX in the US on Tuesday, 17 September, and is available to stream now on Disney+ in the UK, Ireland and Australia with new episodes arriving weekly.
The show landed on the streamer a day after its American debut with minimal fanfare. However, its placement isn’t too surprising as Disney+ is the UK home for many other hugely popular FX shows like The Bear and Shogun.
