Andy Murray is one of Team GB’s most famous stars and his dream of becoming a three-time Olympic champion is just about still alive.
The British tennis star, who has already confirmed this will be the final tournament of his career, has scraped into the second round of the doubles to keep his Games going.
The 2012 Olympics was one of the biggest moments in Murray’s career as he beat Roger Federer to claim gold in the Men’s Singles – sparking a run that saw him win his first Grand Slam later that year before finally becoming Wimbledon champion in 2013.
At Rio 2016, the Scot became the first tennis player in Olympic history with two singles gold medals having beat Juan Martin del Potro.
His injuries prevented him from attempting one final run as a singles competitor, leaving the doubles with Dan Evans as his last hope.
The Team GB pair defied the odds to save five match points and knock out Japan’s Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori.
The 37-year-old’s next – and potentially final – match at the Olympics will be on Tuesday, July 30.
The match is expected to start at 5:30pm UK time but that will depend on the earlier results.
The Team GB duo will play Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen of Belgium.
Murray and Evans were on the cusp of defeat in the first round that would have been the final nail in the former’s professional career.
The Brits lost the opening set 6-2, before fighting back from 4-2 down in the second to win on a tie-break.
And they then saved five match points after trailing 9-4 in the deciding set tie-break, before winning 11-9.
“I don’t think I’ve ever saved five match points in a row,” Murray said. “In singles it’s almost impossible to do that, so I don’t think I’ve ever done that before.”
Should Murray and Evans win again, third-round games start from 11am on Wednesday.
Semi-finals are on Thursday, August 1, with the bronze medal match scheduled for Friday, August 2.
The gold will then be decided on Saturday, August 3.
