The pinnacle of American sport, Super Bowl LIX, is fast approaching with the Kansas City Chiefs set to face off against the Philadelphia Eagles. Last year’s championship was held in Las Vegas for the first time, where the Chiefs defended their title in a nail-biting overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
This year, the action moves to New Orleans, marking the city’s 11th time hosting the event in NFL history. The Caesars Superdome, which will host its eighth championship game – the most of any NFL stadium – will serve as the backdrop for Super Bowl LIX.
Unfortunately for local fans, the New Orleans Saints won’t be participating; instead, NFC champions Philadelphia Eagles and the Chiefs will vie for an unprecedented third consecutive win. Much like the New England Patriots under Tom Brady, the Chiefs have clinched back-to-back championships with Patrick Mahomes at the helm.
No team has ever secured three consecutive titles in the Super Bowl era, and the Eagles now stand between Andy Reid’s squad and history. Super Bowl LIX is scheduled to kick off at 6.30pm local time, translating to around 11.30pm for UK viewers.
With an extended half-time show, the action could continue until approximately 4am. UK viewers can watch the spectacle in New Orleans on free-to-air television, with ITV holding the rights.
The coverage will commence at 10.45pm and will also be streamed on itvX. Sky Sports will provide live coverage across their channels and Sky Go, starting their broadcast at the earlier time of 10pm.
The BBC held the Super Bowl rights for seven years but they lost them to ITV from 2023.
Fans wishing to experience the game with an authentic US broadcast can purchase DAZN’s NFL Game Pass for a one-off fee of 99p. As for the Super Bowl halftime show, Grammy Award winner Kendrick Lamar is set to headline.
Fresh from winning five awards, including best song for his hit ‘Not Like Us’, this track – the final instalment in a feud with Canadian rapper Drake – could potentially be the performance highlight, although he hasn’t explicitly confirmed whether he will perform the track. SZA is also scheduled to join Kendrick on stage, with the pair embarking on a tour after the game.
