Kentucky basketball: Mark Pope discusses loss to Alabama Crimson Tide
Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope discusses the Wildcats’ tough loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday at Rupp Arena.
Kentucky basketball has bullied Vanderbilt for more than two decades. After the Commodores won four consecutive meetings — two each in 2006 and 2007 — they’ve tasted victory only eight times since, compared to 28 triumphs for the Wildcats.
From January 2017 through January 2023, UK vanquished Vandy 14 straight times. And Kentucky owns a decisive edge in the all-time series, up 157-49.
New UK coach Mark Pope seeks to continue the program’s success versus Vanderbilt today, as the teams square off at Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville.
“I do think it’s a great venue,” Pope said of Memorial Gymnasium, which opened in 1952 and is the oldest active home venue in the 16-team SEC. “Right now the way they’re playing, it’s a great gym. And I’m sure it’ll be sold out — like all gyms (we visit).
“They’ve got some good juice in there, so it should be really fun. Like, you want to play in great places, and I think it’s a great place.”
UK (14-4, 3-2 SEC) and Vanderbilt (15-4, 3-3) are looking to get back on the winning track after losses in their most recent outings — with both falling to the same team: Alabama. The Crimson Tide beat the Wildcats, 102-97, last week at Rupp Arena. Then Alabama turned around and dismissed Vandy, 103-87, at Coleman Coliseum on Tuesday.
Here’s what you need to know to follow today’s game from home:
UK and Vanderbilt are slated to tip off at 2:30 p.m. ET today at Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville.
