College basketball freshmen who are making a case to be lottery picks
Here are 3 freshmen who are playing their way into becoming lottery picks for the 2025 NBA Draft.
LEXINGTON — Even as stout as Kentucky basketball has been against top-10 foes this season, entering today with five such triumphs, it doesn’t install Mark Pope‘s club as a favorite today in the mind of oddsmakers.
That’s because today’s opponent, Auburn, has been so dominant since the 2024-25 season began. The Tigers, No. 1 in both major polls (the USA TODAY Coaches and AP Top 25) are 26-2 overall and boast a 14-1 mark in SEC play. They’re winning by an average of 16.7 points per game — not surprisingly, that’s the best victory margin in the league, and No. 5 nationally.
With a win today, or an Alabama loss to Tennessee, Auburn will clinch at least a share of the regular-season conference title. A Tigers’ victory today, coupled with a Crimson Tide defeat, gives Auburn the regular-season league crown outright.
But the Wildcats aren’t used to losing to the Tigers, holding a 98-23 advantage in the all-time series. And UK is 51-2 versus Auburn in Lexington, including a 31-2 mark at Rupp Arena. The Wildcats have won 20 straight games at Rupp against the Tigers since their last defeat, a 53-52 stunner of then-top-ranked UK in 1988.
This will be the first time Pope, in his debut campaign as UK’s coach, faces Auburn and coach Bruce Pearl.
Here’s what you need to know to follow today’s game from home:
UK and Auburn are slated to tip off at 1 p.m. today at Rupp Arena.
Betting odds: Kentucky is 4 ½-point home underdog (-105) on DraftKings, which set the over/under at 167 ½ points (-110). The money line odds are Kentucky +185, Auburn -225.
The contest between the Wildcats and Tigers will air on ABC. Dan Shulman (play-by-play), Jay Bilas (analyst) and Jess Sims (sideline) will have the call.
