The SAG awards unfurled in Los Angeles last night, offering up one of the most opulent red carpet’s of this year so far. Old Hollywood glamour appeared as the sartorial theme of the evening, with silk gowns and sculptural silhouettes in vintage peachy hues and vivid reds. But if we’re honest, it was vintage French fashion which stole the show on the red carpet.
Not one, but two stars opted for archival pieces by French fashion houses for the awards show. Actress and singer Keke Palmer arrived looking like a Golden Age film star in a vintage strapless velvet Chanel gown which featured gold embellishments along the neckline. The dress was pulled from the fashion houses’ autumn/winter 1985 show, making it a 40-year-old piece, and eight years older than Palmer herself.
While the gown was originally styled with a pair of short black gloves with matching gold detailing on the runway, the Nope actress wore the dress with past-the-elbow length velvet gloves. Her beauty look continued in the vintage vein, with Palmer’s volumised ‘Old Hollywood’ bob and red lip cementing the look’s timeless elegance.
Cynthia Erivo also delivered the second coming of French archival fashion on the red carpet. While Palmer went for gold, Erivo opted for silver, in futuristic Givenchy couture by Alexander McQueen from his autumn/winter 1997 collection. The Wicked actress worked with her stylist Jason Bolden to find the gown, which was constructed with a dramatic fringed neckline, voluminous sleeves, a handkerchief hemline and trailing cape.
Erivo sported her usual set of incredible sculptural nails, and pulled the metallic element of her dress up to her eyes with a shimmering silver eyeshadow.
