UK holidaymakers heading to Spain have been warned of a new beach ban in a quiet seaside town. Torrox, a popular destination on the Costa del Sol, has extended its existing rules on beach use, prohibiting tents, gazebos, and similar structures from being set up along its shores.
The new measure, approved by local councillors on February 24, aims to increase safety and free up public spaces, according to Sur in English. Vanessa Lopez, a councillor in the area, explained that such structures take up large areas of the beach, create excessive noise, and obstruct the view of lifeguards, making it harder for them to carry out their duties effectively.
She added that the ban would improve cleanliness and accessibility, ensuring emergency vehicles can reach the beach when necessary.
Torrox first made headlines in 2014 when it became the first municipality in Malaga to issue fines for beachgoers who tried to reserve spots by leaving deckchairs, umbrellas, or personal belongings unattended.
While the latest rule will not carry fines for those who break it, it has still stirred discussion among tourists and locals alike.
There are, however, some exceptions. The restrictions will not apply to certain special events, including excursions, school visits, and trips for people with disabilities, as long as prior approval is granted.
Additionally, the rule will be temporarily lifted for one night only, San Juan night, allowing beachgoers to set up tents between 6pm on June 23 and 1am on June 24.
While some locals support the move, arguing it will create a more enjoyable experience for beach visitors, others have expressed concern that it could negatively impact tourism.
With summer approaching, UK travellers planning a beach getaway to Torrox may need to adjust their plans to comply with the new restrictions.
