Christmas Day, celebrated annually on 25 December, holds great significance for Christians worldwide as it marks the birth of Jesus Christ. 

The occasion is observed with worship services, carol singing, and nativity plays that recount the story of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem. 

Families gather to share festive meals, exchange gifts, and reflect on themes of love, joy, and goodwill that characterize the celebration. For many, it is also a time to show kindness through acts of charity and generosity.

While many people in the United Kingdom will spend the day enjoying festive meals, attending church services, or watching sporting events, some may still need to pick up last-minute groceries. 

However, under the Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004 in the United Kingdom, most retail stores across various sectors are legally required to close on Christmas Day.

While many shops remain open until Christmas Eve for last-minute shopping, virtually all stores will be closed on Christmas Day itself. 

All major supermarkets, including Aldi, Asda, Co-op, Lidl, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Waitrose, will be closed on Wednesday, 25 December. 

Additionally, major shopping centres in Greater Manchester, such as the Arndale and Trafford Centres, will also be closed.

The only major convenience stores open on Christmas Day will be those located at motorway service stations. This is because motorway service areas are required to remain open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing essential services for drivers, including food, drinks, fuel, and toilets, even on Christmas Day.
