Holidaymakers have been told to expect flight cancellations and delays for national and international flights to and from the country
UK travellers have been warned of ‘widespread disruption’ to public services in Greece on Friday, February 28 due to mass demonstrations.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has issued an update for its travel advice for the country. It warns British nationals of a 24-hour strike which is taking place in Greece on Friday.
The demonstrations are taking place to mark the second anniversary of the Tempi train crash, when a freight train and passenger train collided, killing 57 people.
Brits are warned to expect flight cancellations and delays, along with disruption to public transport. The FCDO also states that public services such as hospitals “may only deal with emergency cases”.
The UK Foreign Office said: “Mass demonstrations and widespread disruption to public services will take place across Greece on 28 February to mark the second anniversary of the 2023 Tempi Valley train collision (Thessaly region, in central Greece). The collision, involving a passenger train and a freight train, killed 57 people and injured 85 passengers.
“All public transport will face serious disruptions and suspension to services. Ferries, nationwide trains, and air traffic controllers will conduct a 24-hour strike. Expect flight cancellations and delays for national and international flights to and from all airports in Greece.
“Public services, including hospitals, will face widespread disruptions and may only deal with emergency cases.”
In further guidance for strikes and demonstrations in Greece, the Foreign Office says: “Some demonstrations in the past have turned violent.
“Avoid demonstrations wherever possible and move away to the last known safe place. Security forces often use tear gas to break up demonstrations, which can harm your breathing and vision.”
