The chaos of college football Saturdays continued in Week 5. 

Kentucky, entering a matchup against No. 6 Ole Miss, overcame the odds on the road as a missed field goal doomed the Rebels in the final moments of a 20-17 loss to the Wildcats. Despite a standout performance from WR Tre Harris, Ole Miss dropped its first game of the season — and shocked college football fans in the process.

The Wildcats, despite improving to just a 3-2 record with the win, continued to prove themselves as a team capable of beating any in the country. In Week 3, Kentucky nearly beat Georgia, then the No. 1-ranked team in the AP Poll, but fell just short with a 13-12 final score.

This time around, Kentucky pulled off the massive upset. Saturday’s win was its highest-ranked road win since 1977.

Here’s what you need to know about how the Wildcats pulled off the miraculous win vs. Ole Miss.

The Rebels came into Saturday’s game on a roll. After blowout wins over Furman, MTSU, Wake Forest and Georgia Southern over the first four weeks of the season, Ole Miss had momentum on its side for this matchup. 

Instead, Kentucky took a 10-7 lead into halftime. Rebels RB Henry Parrish Jr. put his team up early with a one-yard score, but the Wildcats answered with a field goal and five-yard touchdown pass from QB Brock Vandagriff to WR Dane Key, was one of Kentucky’s stars of the matchup, as the first half clock winded down.

Keeping the matchup close, the two teams traded field goals in the third quarter before Harris caught a 48-yard scoring pass from Jaxson Dart as the fourth frame approached. Dart would finish with 261 passing yards, one touchdown pass and no interceptions vs. Kentucky.

Most of the fourth quarter was quiet, but the Wildcats needed just a touchdown on an offensive fumble recovery from TE Josh Kattus with 2:25 remaining to take the 20-17 lead they didn’t look back from.

On its final drive, Ole Miss moved down the field to the Kentucky 31-yard line, eventually setting up a 48-yard field goal for Caden Davis that would’ve tied it. Instead, he pulled it left, sealing the deal for the Wildcats’ upset.

Who is Dane Key?

While Vandagriff was solid in the team’s upset win, it was Key, a junior wide receiver, that was a difference-maker for the Wildcats’ offense Saturday. 

Key finished with eight catches for 105 yards and a touchdown, which gave Kentucky the lead entering the second half. It was the second-straight big game for Key after he had seven catches for 145 yards last week vs. Ohio.

Key has been with Kentucky for all three of his collegiate seasons, finishing with 636 yards in 2023. Entering Saturday’s game, he was by far the Wildcats’ leading receiver with 264 yards. However, his touchdown vs. Ole Miss was his first of the season, and it proved to be a massive one in a memorable win for Kentucky.
