The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is rolling out in phases next year.
From January 8, 2025, visa-free non-EU nationals must receive an ETA to enter the UK. For the full list of applicable non-EU nationalities, see here.
From March 5, travellers with EU passports who can enter the UK visa-free will be required to receive an ETA to enter the UK. For the full list of applicable EU nationalities, see here.
At this stage, the ETA application process does not apply to South African passport holders who will still undergo normal visa processes to visit the UK.
The UK ETA application process requires travellers to upload scans of their passports, submit facial scans, and answer questions about themselves and the reason for their travel to the UK. The application costs £10 (R228) per applicant.
Applicants receive a decision within three working days.
