UK Consumer Confidence inched up again in June, although there’s little in data company GfK’s latest figures to get too excited about.
Confidence rose three points this month but its headline score remained negative at -14 “owing to the difficulties so many have experienced as the unrelenting cost-of-living crisis batters household budgets”.
But it’s the third monthly increase since March “driven by optimism about UK economy”, and while still in negative territory it has at least recovered significantly since the record low of -49 reached in September 2022.
And overall, three measures were up, one was down and one was unchanged by comparison to last month’s announcement.
Joe Staton, Client Strategy Director GfK, said the three-point improvement was “bolstered by consumers’ more sympathetic view of the economy for the last year and the 12 months to come”.
Those measures on the general economic situation registered sharp increases of seven points (albeit to -32) for the last 12 months and up six points to -11 for next 12 months
The index measuring changes in personal finances during the last year is unchanged at -10, remaining five points better than June 2023. The forecast for personal finances over the next 12 months is down three points at +4, which is five points higher than this time last year.
Meanwhile, the Major Purchase Index is up three points to -23, two points higher than this month last year. And the Savings Index dipped five points to +22 in June, three points lower than this time last year.
