HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – The University of Kentucky basketball team was in Perry County to help build homes in the BlueSky Subdivision on Friday.
Coaches and players rotated between four homes as they raised walls, hammered in nails and more.
Head Coach Mark Pope said Kentucky basketball is bigger than just the team.
“This is Kentucky’s team. This is not our team. We say that all the time. It’s not our team, it’s not my team, it’s not the players’ team, it’s Kentucky’s team, and we have a function here that’s number one first and foremost winning games, but then there’s a lot of other things that’re just as important. This is the state’s team,” said Pope.
The team partnered with Housing Development Alliance to participate in construction.
They raised the walls of a home being built for the Robertsons, a Breathitt County family impacted by the July 2022 flood.
“It’s a blessing, a complete blessing,” said Heather Robertson.
Kentucky freshman Trent Noah, who is from Eastern Kentucky, called it an honor to be a part of building the homes.
