Since the UK left the EU, British tourists could be asked to prove they have £97 spending money per day to holiday in Spain.
The rule applies to all non-EU nationals and while tourists are unlikely to be asked, it is a possibility.
But what other strict rules could see tourists turned away from a border?
John Charnock, a travel expert from StressFreeCarRental.com, said: “Before people go on holiday, it’s really important to make sure you have done everything to ensure you are eligible to enter the country.
“Of course most of us are aware of general rules like having the correct travel documents and visas but there are some requirements that people aren’t aware of like being able to provide proof of onward travel.”
A water-damaged passport or one with a small tear could see people detained for questioning or their passport may be declared invalid.
These rules vary across countries but some nations may consider a damaged passport invalid if they can’t read personal details.
Many countries will require tourists to have proof of onward travel whether that’s a return plane ticket or a ticket to another destination.
Some countries will require tourists to have blank passport pages to enter. This can vary from country to country so it’s important to check the rules and renew your passport if necessary.
As in Spain, some countries could ask tourists to prove they have enough money for their holiday.
Tourists who are staying with a friend should try to have the agreement in writing.
A criminal record could see tourists banned from entering some countries. The USA has strict rules and some Britons may not be allowed to travel there.
Some countries require tourists to have vaccinations before entry. It’s important to check the relevant requirements for your holiday destination.
Some medicines that are legal in the UK may be restricted in other countries. Medical equipment will also need to be carried in its original packaging.
