Great Yarmouth, a seaside town in Norfolk, remains a popular holiday spot despite being labelled one of the UK’s worst coastal destinations by consumer watchdog Which?.
The survey highlighted several downsides, citing cleanliness issues, outdated game arcades, lacklustre bed and breakfasts, and aggressive seagulls that detract from the experience.
Visitors are, however, drawn to its expansive sandy beaches, and budget-friendly prices.
A tourist wrote on the online travel advice site Tripadvisor: “What a beautiful beach! Super sandy, never crowded, plenty of room for everything.”
Ideal for families seeking a getaway, hotel stays in the area are incredibly cheap, with some rooms costing as little as £11 per night.
Another user on Tripadvisor attested: “Beautiful white beaches and huge stretch of amusements rides, bowling saline centre, trinket shops and ice cream everywhere.
“Even found a burger for £2.00 thought I was back in 70’s with them prices and tasted pretty good. Impressed and will definitely be back.”
Many tourists appear unfazed by the Which? report and continue to defend the town, praising its quiet beaches and affordable ice cream trucks, candy shops and restaurants.
In fact, Great Yarmouth even provides fun backup plans for rainy days with indoor attractions like the SEA LIFE Aquarium and local museums.
Pleasure Beach in particular is a family favourite and has “something for all ages”, according to a Tripadvisor user.
Another visitor added: “What a fantastic day out in Great Yarmouth! We visited as a family of five, with three children aged eight, six and four. We also went with a family of four, with children aged eight and 12 and grandparents. Everyone was entertained for the whole day and this is fantastic value for money!
“We didn’t stop for the whole day with rides suitable for the whole party and not once did anyone ever get bored. Food choices and prices were brilliant. Staff were very helpful. A must-visit when in Yarmouth as a family!”
