The year coming to an end means that a lot of us are already thinking about what destinations we should start booking for our holidays next year, and with many countries facing overtourism issues and protests, the decision is even harder.
Well, someone decided to share a post on Reddit seeking advice on which countries are worth visiting and asking other users if there are “any hidden gems out there.”
The post reads: “What are the best places to visit that aren’t overrun with tourists?
“Saw a post about places that aren’t worth going to anymore because of over-tourism. On the flip side, what are the best trips you’ve been on that weren’t ruined by mass tourism? Looking for spots that still feel true to their character, aren’t packed with tourists, and aren’t crazy expensive. Any hidden gems out there?”

The comment said: “Italy is celebrating a Jubilee centred around Rome and [Vatican City] in 2025. They are expecting 35 million more tourists than normal. You couldn’t pay me to endure that.”
The Jubliee is a Holy year in the Catholic church and will be taking place from December 24 to January 6 2026. It will end on Epiphany, a Christian holiday that takes place to remember the Three Wise Men, who visited Jesus after His birth.
The special Holy Year happens once every quarter of a century and will see millions of pilgrims visiting the Italian capital seeking a stronger connection to the faith through expressing gratitude to God and requesting the grace of forgiveness.
According to the England and Wales Catholic Church website, it is “a time to re-establish a proper relationship with God, with one another, and will all of creation.”
