Representatives for Tiger Woods have reportedly sent a cease and desist notice to a new party golf course in Wales over its name. Amateur golfer Matthew Wharton has admitted that he was shocked to receive the letter after launching his PuttStroke venue.
The name of the premium mini golf course bears a striking resemblance to Woods’s business PopStroke. Woods is a co-owner of the PopStroke business that operates several mini golf courses in the US.
According to the Daily Post, JA Kemp, a leading patent and trademark company in London representing Woods, have contacted Wharton over concerns that fans may be misled by the similarity between the names of the two businesses.
Speaking about his proposals last month, Wharton said: “I’m taking inspiration from several of the mini golf courses designed by Tiger Woods and his team. I’m calling it Puttstroke but I may have to think again if I get a warning letter from Tiger.”
But Wharton now faces a name change and will put the decision in the hands of the public after the ‘cease and desist’ letter. His project, which features an illuminated course, aims to create a family-oriented mix of golfing fun and al fresco dining.
“I was a bit shocked to receive the letter,” Wharton said in a separate interview.
“It arrived pretty soon after I announced the venture. I was surprised it had caught Tiger’s eye so quickly, but I suppose in a way that’s quite a compliment – maybe it shows he’s worried about the competition!
“I’m happy to go along with the request and look for a new name. I’ve decided to seek inspiration from the public – to see if they can suggest something suitable. I’d be delighted to hear ideas for the new name so long as it’s not Putty McPuttFace or something.
