The British Isles have long been a favoured summer holiday spot. With stunning coastlines, sandy beaches and fantastic seasonal produce, it’s no surprise.
The Isle of Wight is one such island that is full of beauty, charm and character and has plenty to offer, all year round.
Whilst being a popular summer destination, the island also has a vibrant array of offerings in the off season too.
One of the most popular places to visit in the area is Osbourne House in East Cowes, a former retreat for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
Today, it still retains a large collection of the royal couple’s possessions, art work and photographs.
A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “Probably got the best experience as we were out of season. Beautiful house and gardens. Took a walk down to the beach through the woods and walkway.
“The information on the trees and planting dates was exceptional and the room guides were very clear. Plenty to see and do and would go again.”
If you’re visiting in the colder months and looking to find an indoor activity, you can head to the Shanklin Theatre, Medina Theatre or Apollo Theatre which have everything from pantomimes to tribute acts, ballets and jazz concerts.
For stunning views of the coast, you should visit The Needles which is a world-famous landmark.
You can visit its lighthouse, or even take a cable car trip, or you can relax on the beach.
A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “Just been on this cable car. Amazing experience with wonderful views. 100% worth the money.”
To get to the Isle of Wight, you should first travel to Portsmouth Harbour and then a Wightlink foot passenger ferry to Ryde Pier Head.
Carisbrooke Castle is another of the top spots to visit while in the Isle of Wight.
The castle has been an artillery fortress, king’s prison and a royal summer residence. Today it’s the quintessential castle, with plenty to see and enjoy in the fresh open air.
You can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding scenery as the castle is situated up high.
A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “A lovely place to visit. Steeped in history with lots of informative information on exhibits and history of the castle.
“Great little cafe for lunch. Castle walls offer stunning views out to all corners of the island. Very friendly knowledgeable staff. There’s some cute donkeys too, definitely worth a visit and can be done in a few hours.”
