The UK remains shrouded in fog on Saturday morning, causing significant travel disruptions. Many airports are still experiencing delays, with at least 20 flights cancelled and 29 delayed at Heathrow by 10 am. Meanwhile, Gatwick has reported 26 delayed flights and one cancellation.

This dense fog has persisted across many regions over the past couple of days, formed under stable high-pressure conditions, significantly reducing visibility. Today, the fog is expected to linger over large parts of England and Wales, particularly in southern England. However, further north, increasing winds should help early mist and fog gradually clear.

A large area of high pressure centred over mainland Europe is still exerting its influence across southern Britain, but further north, a cold front will bring outbreaks of rain across Northern Ireland and western Scotland, accompanied b a strengthening breeze across the far north-west.

Dense and disruptive fog

Staying generally dry but dull and grey across England and Wales with mist, fog and low cloud lingering, although a few breaks may allow for brighter periods to develop across north Wales and the Midlands during the afternoon. The best of the sunny spells on Saturday will be across north-east Scotland. However, scattered showers will develop in the far north, too. Daytime highs will climb to 7°C for London, 6°C for Birmingham and 11°C for Glasgow, although where the fog does linger temperatures will be limited.

Patchy outbreaks of rain will sink southwards and eastwards into northern England on Saturday evening before turning increasingly light patchy overnight. Clear intervals will break through elsewhere with variable amounts of cloud and another cold front will push in from the north-west bringing heavy and persistent rain across northern Scotland.

Heavy and persistent rain

Rain will persist across northern Scotland on Sunday, continuing for much of the day and often turning heavy. Elsewhere, it will remain mostly dry but dull, with cloudy skies. However, as the day progresses, some brighter spells may develop as the cloud cover begins to break up. It will be a breezier day, with the increased wind helping to mix the air and disperse fog and murky conditions. Brisk to locally strong westerly winds are expected across Scotland.

The best of the sunshine will be during the afternoon, especially across Wales and the Midlands and in this sunshine it will feel a touch milder with highs of 9°C Norwich, 10°C for Cardiff and 11°C for. Glasgow.
