The city is the capital of La Rioja, a famous wine region south of San Sebastian in the Basque country.

La Rioja remains a leading wine tourism location with 748,345 visitors in 2022, a 62 percent increase from 2021.
It is estimated that tourism boosts the local economy €155million (£130million) each year.
