Once home to artist Vincent Van Gogh, the sleepy village of Auvers-sur-Oise is less than an hour’s train ride from Paris and lets visitors swap city life for tranquillity.

Van Gogh, one of the most respected artists in the world, described this quaint town as “seriously beautiful” in a letter to his brother, so you’ll be sure it won’t disappoint.

If his words weren’t enough, its beauty is reflected in the sheer amount of work it inspired Van Gogh to create. In just two months, he painted close to eighty canvases to bring alive the picturesque location.

At first glance, you’ll understand exactly why he fell in love – centuries-old stone buildings line the winding country lanes, vibrant blossoms infuse the town with colour, and the River Oise adds to its serene charm.

A must-visit is the 13th-century church in between two Romanesque chapels, which you may recognise from Van Gogh’s painting “The Church at Auvers”.

You can also visit the Auberge Ravoux, the place where Van Gogh spent the last two months of his life. His bedroom has remained untouched since the painter’s death in 1890.

Those in search of a tipple should head to the Absinthe Museum to test the lethally strong French spirit made from fennel, anise, and wormwood.
