The village is located near the Peak District’s famous Mam Tor walk, which leads to incredible views over the area.
Castleton is popular for its show caves, history, shops, Christmas lights, garland ceremony, Winnats Pass, and Cave Dale, with many wishing to walk on the numerous footpaths in the area.
If you’re visiting the area, taking the Mam Tor walk is a must-do and is a popular choice of path within the peaks.
One person who completed the walk on Tripadvisor said: “I came to Castleton to walk the cave dale, mam tor and loose hill loop approx 13km.
“Mam tor is a moderate climb with a paved footpath and plenty of stopping points. Views from the top are spectacular looking over Hope Valley. You can park on the road at the bottom of the hill if you want to just take the short climb to the summit.
“The walk then continues onto the ridge path which again is paved but it was raining so it can get slippy in parts so take care when walking.”
Another notable landmark to visit in the area is Peveril Castle, a structure standing as ruins that can be seen high above the village.
Castleton is one of England’s earliest Norman fortresses and its keep was built by Henry II in 1176. From the top, you can take in an impressive view over Hope Valley.
In Castleton, you’ll find traditional countryside pubs, perfect for a post-dinner walk to warm up after being out in the cold.
The George, one much-loved pub in the area, is known for its delicious food and wholesome cosy atmosphere.
