Visitors to France should be sure to visit the city of Annecy, known as the ‘Alpine Venice’ due to its numerous canals, which wind throughout the city.
Located less than an hour from the Swiss border, Annecy can be found on the Northern bank of Lake Annecy, which is named after the city itself.
The beautiful city has been labelled ‘unmissable’ by travel influencer Jamie Hughes, who posts online as Jay Goes Global.
Sharing some videos of his recent visit to France’s own Venice-like city, Jamie shared that he flew into Geneva airport, which is less than an hour from Annecy.
Other nearby airports include Chamberry and Lyon, although these are then both around an hour and twenty minutes from the city itself.
Sharing another video of his Annecy trip, Jamie revealed his must-visit locations, the first of which is the city’s old town, the medieval historic centre of the city.
The old town is also known as the ‘five bell towers district’, as it is home to five church bells; the Basilica of the Visitation Order, the church of Notre-Dame-de-Liesse, the church of Saint-Maurice, the church of Saint-François de Sales and the cathedral of Saint-Pierre.
Another highlight in the old town is the Palais de l’Ile, a picturesque medieval castle and prison in the middle of the Thiou Canal, which now serves as an art and history museum.
Jamie also recommends making a beeline to the Pont des Amours, a pedestrian iron footbridge that offers a breathtaking view of Lake Annecy.
And for those wanting to enjoy a walk or a cycle during their Annecy trip, Jamie recommends the Promenade du Thiou, a route that has been categorised as ‘easy’ on AllTrails, so even if you don’t walk much back at home, you’ll still be able to get your steps in while on holiday.
Jamie’s fourth recommendation is Annecy le Vieux, a former commune in the French Alps that merged with the city of Annecy in 2017.
You can take in the area’s history by booking a guided boat tour or just have a relaxing stroll in this picturesque location on the banks of Lake Annecy.
The lake itself is Jamie’s final highlight of the trip; here, you can enjoy some relaxing breaks on the or take part in some sporting activities, including boating, paragliding, horse-riding, and even swimming if the temperature is warm enough or if you’re feeling particularly brave.
