When it comes to selecting a holiday destination, people are becoming increasingly more often drawn to places that aren’t crowded and offer a sense of tranquility.

For Brits, a location with warm, sunny weather is often a top priority, making areas like the Canary Islands a popular choice for year-round holidays.

According to Which?, holidaymakers’ favourite resorts in the Canary Islands have been revealed, with a lesser-known destination in Gran Canaria taking the top spot.

In a recent survey conducted by Which?, Puerto de Mogán was crowned the best resort area in the Canary Islands, scoring an impressive 90%.

Participants were asked to rate their experiences based on eight criteria, including beach quality, scenery, food and drink, accommodation, and value for money.

The overall resort score was calculated based on satisfaction and likelihood to recommend. Puerto de Mogan received high praise for its charming marina, white-washed houses and maze-like old town.

Described as a “peaceful, beautiful place”, it won the hearts of visitors, earning five stars for accommodation and four-star ratings for food and drink, scenery and value for money – the only resort in the survey to achieve this. It also scored three stars for peace and quiet.

Other top-rated destinations include Playa Blanca, the highest-rated resort in Lanzarote, which received a 77% rating. Located at the southern tip of the island, this resort is known for its relaxed atmosphere, with visitors describing it as “child-friendly” and “easy going”.

In third place, with a 75% rating, are Costa Adeje in Tenerife, Costa Teguise in Lanzarote, and Las Palmas in Gran Canaria.

Costa Adeje was awarded an impressive five-star rating for its accommodations, with guests praising the “fantastic” beachfront hotels. However, the resort only received three stars for shopping, scenery, and food and drink.

Meanwhile, the “friendly” Costa Teguise earned four stars for its accommodations and three stars for its beach, scenery, food and drink, value for money, and tranquility.

One visitor noted: “We like that it’s not the main attraction in Lanzarote. It offers plenty of dining and drinking options without being overpriced.”

For those looking for a mix of city life and beach relaxation, Gran Canaria’s capital, Las Palmas, is an excellent choice.

One traveller described it as “a city first and a tourist destination second,” and it received three stars for attractions, value for money, food and drink, scenery, and peace and quiet. Its highest score, four stars, was for accommodation.

Rory Boland, Which? Travel Editor, said: “The Canaries are beloved by Brits for their all-year round sun and while many thousands of us visit every year, our research suggests holidaymakers prefer the quieter resorts to the package holiday fly and flop hotspots.

“Protests this year showed some locals are very angry about the negative impacts of mass tourism. Choosing a less popular resort that topped our survey will help alleviate those pressures and lead to a better holiday.

“Look for ways to support the local economy – for example by choosing family-run hotels, bars and restaurants over multi-national chains and holiday lets.”
