Kyoto, Japan, renowned for its stunning temples, serene gardens, and rich cultural heritage, has been named the most beautiful city in Asia.
The vote was decided by Ranker, after thousands of voters from around the world, voted in favour of the city for its timeless charm and enduring appeal as a top travel destination.
Kyoto emerged as the clear favourite, surpassing other well-known cities like Singapore, Bangkok, and Seoul, thanks to its unique blend of traditional and modern aesthetics.
Kyoto, the former imperial capital of Japan, is often celebrated for its preservation of ancient Japanese culture.
The city is home to over 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines, and 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the iconic Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) and Fushimi Inari Taisha, famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates.
Its narrow, cobblestone streets, traditional wooden machiya houses, and meticulously maintained gardens transport visitors back in time, offering a glimpse into Japan’s storied past.
But Kyoto’s appeal is not limited to its historical sites.
The city is also a hub of contemporary Japanese culture, with vibrant neighbourhoods like Gion and Pontocho offering a lively mix of restaurants, teahouses, and shops.
Kyoto’s culinary scene, particularly its kaiseki (traditional multi-course meal) dining, is internationally acclaimed, adding to the city’s allure.
The recognition from Ranker highlights Kyoto’s ability to captivate both first-time visitors and seasoned travelers alike.
“Kyoto is a city that embodies the essence of Japan,” one voter commented.
“Its beauty is not just in its temples or gardens, but in the way the old and new coexist in perfect harmony.”
Tourism in Kyoto has seen a resurgence in recent years, with visitors from around the world flocking to experience its seasonal attractions, such as the cherry blossoms in spring and the vibrant autumn foliage.
The city’s popularity is also bolstered by its accessibility, being just a short train ride from other major Japanese cities like Osaka and Tokyo.
