Spain and Italy are among the top 10 visited countries on the globe, boasting gorgeous landscapes, glorious sunshine and dreamy escapes.
But 2025 might be the year to try something new – and it seems that is the thought process of many as there is one European destination that is topping the Google search charts.
Global Travel booking platform OMIO used Google’s search data to find out which destination in Europe is the most popular to visit this year.
And if you like sun and beaches but also appreciate learning about the incredible history and culture a country holds, then this is the destination for you.
Malta, nestled between Sicily and North Africa in the Mediterranean Sea, has taken the top spot for the place to visit this summer.
Google searches of the picturesque island country surged by 57% over the last month, beating the likes of Italy’s capital, Rome and Spain’s gorgeous city of Barcelona.
OMIO highlights the destination’s offer of “an irresistible mix of history, culture, and natural beauty,” and those words alone make Malta sound like a Meditteranean haven you don’t want to overlook.
Its ancient medieval city, Mdina, “renowned for its beautiful architecture”, has a number of historic and monumental buildings dotted around the city.
Explore the fortifications that surround the city and then enter into a world of beautiful landmarks, including St Paul’s Cathedral, dedicated to the Christian Apostle Paul and dating back to the 12 century.
Leaving a TripAdvisor review of the Mdina, one visitor said: “This was a great trip. Medina is like the ancient cities seen on films. Beautiful architecture and no vehicles so peaceful.”
What makes a trip to Malta so great is that the sun escape is only three hours away, meaning you do not have to travel across the world to catch some sun on some of the most beautiful beaches.
Whether it’s golden sandy beaches you’re looking for or unique beaches, like red sand ones, that intrigue you – Malta has it all. Being home to a number of Blue Flag Beaches, you’re guaranteed an amazing experience.
According to Visit Malta, the island is also voted as one of the best diving destinations in the world, highlighting yet another reason why Malta deserves a spot on holiday bucket lists.
So whether it’s a holiday full of adventure or a tranquil escape you are looking for, you are guaranteed both in Malta.
According to travel booking experts, Malta’s “mild, year-round climate and vibrant festivals make it an attractive option for travellers looking for a mix of exploration and relaxation.”
As well as Malta, OMIO looked at other destinations and found six of “the hottest travel destinations for 2025” which feature a number of holiday favourites, including Rome, Venice, Lisbon, Athens and Barcelona.
