A beautiful island is the “best place for winter sun” and just a £25 flight from the UK.
The Canary Islands are a much-loved holiday hotspot and perfect to top up your vitamin D levels and chase away the winter blues.
The Spanish islands enjoy a warm and sunny climate all year round, the flight time is a manageable four hours from the UK and they offer gorgeous scenery and amazing beaches.
In fact The Times recently listed Fuerteventura among its best destinations for winter sun. It described the island as “overseen” compared to the more popular Lanzarote and Tenerife.
It praised the island for offering a “nice balance; it’s certainly not deathly quiet or shut up but nor will you encounter those other isles’ heaving crowds.”
The Times highlighted the “sandy surfy shores” of the south and the “wild, desert-style interior”. It recommends Costa Calama for “terrific sunsets.”
Fuerteventura has an incredible 150 beaches, so there’s no shortage to choose from. La Concha on the northern coast of the island is one of the most famous, with soft white sand and gorgeous turquoise waters, while just along the coast El Cotillo is a popular resort.
Offering a more wild and remote location is Cofete beach on the southwest coast of the island. It’s tricky to get to but worth it, with breathtaking views of golden sand backed by towering cliffs.
At Corralejo National Park you can admire huge sand dunes which meet the island’s volcanic landscape. The national park also covers a 10km stretch of coastline where the rolling dunes meet the ocean.
A holiday to Fuerteventura doesn’t have to break the bank either. Skyscanner shows fares in January starting from as little as £25 from Manchester Airport.
Returns are available from around £38, although it’s important to note that you may have to pay more seat allocation and baggage allowance.
