With more people looking for unique and affordable travel experiences, travel agents have identified a lesser-known gem that rivals the Maldives in beauty but comes without a throng of tourists.
Palawan, an exquisite island in the Philippines, has been dubbed the answer to the Maldives, offering a stunning destination at a fraction of the cost.
In response to the increasing desire among younger travellers for offbeat and less crowded destinations, Palawan has emerged as a standout choice.
According to travel experts at KILROY, a youth and adventure travel agency, the day-to-day costs in Palawan, including accommodation, transport, and food, are almost one-third cheaper on average than those in the Maldives.
This makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers seeking luxury on a shoestring.
Jessica Bollinger, a travel expert and gap year specialist at KILROY, highlights the growing trend of “destination dupes,” where travellers seek out lesser-known locations that offer similar experiences to popular hotspots but without the hefty price tag or the crowds.
“These areas are often more affordable and less crowded than their popular counterparts,” she explains.
“They provide travellers with a more authentic and original travel experience, which is exactly what Gen Z travellers are craving.”
Nestled amidst the pristine waters of the Sulu Sea, Palawan presents an enticing alternative to the luxurious Maldives.
With its breathtaking scenery, secluded beaches, and tranquil ambiance, Palawan offers a serene retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The island’s crystal-clear waters and untouched landscapes provide a sense of tranquility that rivals even the most renowned tourist destinations.
Visitors to Palawan can indulge in lounging on powdery white sands or snorkelling among vibrant coral reefs, all while enjoying the island’s natural beauty without the crowds typically found in more famous hotspots.
The island’s serene environment and stunning vistas make it a perfect destination for those seeking a peaceful getaway.
“For young travelers seeking the idyllic charm of the Maldives without the hefty price tag, Palawan emerges as our top choice,” Jessica adds.
“It offers the same picturesque landscapes and tranquil experiences but at a much more affordable rate.”
Palawan’s appeal lies not only in its affordability but also in its rich cultural experiences.
Travellers can immerse themselves in the local culture, enjoying authentic Filipino hospitality and exploring the island’s diverse heritage.
From visiting traditional villages to experiencing local cuisine, Palawan offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness.
