Just 10 hours from the UK in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka reaches 27C in December and gets up to seven hours of glorious sunlight.

To see the gigantic Asian elephants roaming among palm trees, head to Bundala National Park in the south of the country. You may also get to see some of the 200 species of native and migratory birds, like brahminy kites, storks, wild ducks, and peacocks.

One of the best attractions is hopping aboard the train from Colombo to Ella, which passes through steep mountains and tea plantations.
Its nine arch bridge has become somewhat famous, and once you see the backdrop of lush greenery contrasting the old metal train travelling along a stone track, you’ll understand why.
Sri Lanka conjures up images of silky golden beaches, and Unawatuna in the south of the island definitely delivers.
Just 40 minutes south, Mirissa is ideal for whale watching from November to April, while Arugam Bay on the east draws surfers with its impressive waves.
Aside from wildlife, Sri Lanka boasts seven UNESCO World Heritage sites and Sigiriya, or “Lion’s Rock” is one of the most esteemed. It’s an ancient royal palace which rises dramatically from the jungle, perched on top of a 200-metre-high rock column.
The sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, said to have provided shelter for Buddha as he attained enlightenment, can be found in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, another UNESCO World Heritage site.
In Sri Lanka, crab is on the menu, and the country’s capital Colombo is the place to try it, with a range of fine dining options to local vendors. Bowl-like pancakes made from rice flour batter are also a must-try for breakfast, or a snack on the go.
Direct flights take 10-11 hours from London Heathrow to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near the capital.
