Greece is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, attracting visitors in their millions.
Last year, a whopping 33 million travelled to Greece, which is over three times the country’s population.
Among the biggest attractions for visitors are undoubtedly the numerous islands located just off its coastline.
The Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea are perhaps the most well-known and frequented of these archipelagoes.
Among them is the world-famous Santorini, with its dazzling white-washed houses and blue-domed churches.
The island gets around 3.4 million tourists a year, far outnumbering Santorini’s 20,000 or so permanent residents.
Yet, there is a fantastic alternative for those looking for a similar destination that is off the beaten track and with practically no tourists.
Sikinos is a secluded island of the Cyclades, situated between Folegandros and Ios.
Mass tourism has yet to reach its shores, a fact perhaps reflected in the lack of official hotels and a handful of tavernas.
What it lacks in tourism infrastructure, it more than makes up for with its stunning natural scenery.
Sikinos offers crystal clear blue waters, quiet beaches and a wild natural landscape second to none.
The island’s capital is Chora, built on the slopes of a hill and from where visitors can get breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea.
The town reflects the traditional Cycladic architectural style, with its whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches and narrow alleys.
The two main tourist attractions are the winery Manalis, which offers food in their restaurant with stunning sunset views.
Then there is the church of Episkope, located just south of the winery and dating back to the 3rd century AD. It was originally a Roman tomb monument.
The best way to get to the island is by ferry from Athens (Piraeus and Lavrio ports).
Ferry connections between Sikinos and other islands are available, including Santorini, Milos, Naxos, Mykonos, Ios and Sifnos.
