But now more people are go farther afield to Cape Verde in Africa.
Only a six hour direct flight from the UK, the ten islands that make up Cape Verde offers year-round sunshine – with temperatures rarely falling below 21C.
This makes it a perfect place for holidaymakers to seek out some winter sun.
Each of the ten islands, in the Atlantic, has a different and distinct feel.
There’s plenty of beaches, with white sand and turquoise waters, to choose from.
Some of our favourites include Santa Maria Beach and Ponta Preta on Sal, Praia de Chaves on Boa Vista and Laginha beach in Mindelo, on São Vicente.
There’s also incredible opportunities for wildlife spotting off the beach with whales, dolphins and turtles often making an appearance in the crystal waters.
Cape Verde is good to visit year-round but the rainy season falls from July to October.
In November, the average daily maximum temperature is 29C and the average daily minimum is 23C.
The islands are also full of walking trails due to magnificent mountains and towering volcanoes.
