Kentucky loves to pop 3-pointers and play at a brisk pace, emerging as one of the best offenses in the country. Dribble-driving Texas A&M is seemingly allergic to the long ball and is a leisurely 213th in shots attempted, but they’re the best offensive rebounding team in Division I. Tuesday night makes for an interesting style clash of ranked SEC opponents, with the Wildcats favored at home.
Mark Pope’s squad hit 16 3-pointers in Saturday’s shootout at Mississippi State. Kentucky picked up its fourth win against a ranked opponent with the 95-90 win, all four of which are currently ranked in the top 16 of the AP Poll (Duke, Gonzaga, Florida).
Jaxson Robinson was effervescent at Starkville. He tallied a season-high 27 points on 9-of-12 shooting, and his seven 3-pointers truncated the raucous energy encircling Humphrey Coliseum. Five of his teammates scored in double figures: Otega Oweh went a smooth 6-of-9 from the floor, Ansley Almonor added 11 points in 19 bench minutes and Lamont Butler hit the pull-away floater.

Kentucky’s offense is electric. In addition to the aforementioned scoring punch, the team’s offensive win share leader is Andrew Carr, while Koby Brea tops the conference in 3-point percentage (48 percent) on more than six tries per game. The Wildcats lead the SEC in total efficiency and perimeter shooting rates.
Texas A&M takes pride on the other end of the court. Buzz Williams is famous for his spirited defensive stance on the sideline, and his Aggies are relentless off the glass. Opponents shoot an uncomfortable 38.7 percent against this defense, and Zhuric Phelps is a supreme irritant with 2.4 steals per game.
A&M will again be without second-leading scorer Wade Taylor IV, the two-time all-conference senior, after he incurred an undisclosed injury Jan. 4. against Texas. But this team still fought hard against No. 5 Alabama over the weekend, falling by just six points in spite of Phelps’ 9-for-29 shooting. The front court looked up to the challenge against the Tide. Henry Coleman III had 11 rebounds and three steals, while Pharrel Payne added nine boards and four blocks.
Memorable matchups: These two yielded three consecutive head-to-head overtime finishes from 2015-16. First, a double-OT nail-biter that kept Kentucky unbeaten, thanks to Devin Booker’s team-high 18 points off the bench and Trey Lyles’ clutch free throws at the end of the first overtime. A&M got its revenge in the next meeting, a 79-77 OT win sealed by Tyler Davis’ buzzer-beating put-back. Kentucky returned one month later with an 82-77 overtime triumph in the SEC Tournament final.
