Taylor Fritz’s girlfriend Morgan Riddle has previously labelled his US Open final opponent Jannik Sinner ‘cute’.
Fritz danced his way to the final of his home Grand Slam on Friday, edging out a five-set classic against countryman Frances Tiafoe in the pair’s semi-final.
Tiafoe twice led at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, before Fritz fought back and eventually decided the game with a dominant 6-1 win in the final set.
It marks the first Grand Slam semi-final win of the 26-year-old’s career, having only ever reached the last eight of a major championship before this year’s US Open.
But away from the court, Fritz is perhaps best known for his relationship with fellow American Riddle – a social media influencer with over 370,000 followers on Instagram.
Dubbed the ‘most famous woman in man’s tennis’ Riddle is often spotted at Fritz’s games acting as the world No.12’s biggest cheerleader.
However, Riddle has in the past admitted to having a soft spot for Fritz’s US Open final opponent, Sinner, calling the Italian ‘cute’ during a clip from the Netflix documentary Break Point.
The scene showcased Fritz being served breakfast by his adoring partner ahead of a match he was due to play against Sinner.
Riddle quizzed Fritz on the star, asking: “How is Sinner playing right now?”
Fritz responded with: “I think he’s been playing good all year.”
With Riddle adding: “I think it will be a fun match. He’s fun to watch, he’s so cute.”
Fritz scoffed at the admission from his lover, but Riddle was quick to double down: “What? He is.”
Despite the frank revelation, they’ll be no doubting who Riddle is supporting ahead of tonight’s US Open final.
But perhaps surprisingly, Fritz revealed he’s feeling the pressure less ahead of tonight’s final than he was the all-American semi: “It was two Americans trying to make it to the final,” he said after beating Tiafoe.
“Both of us wanted to be the guy to make it to the final. It was to make a US Open final, whoever won it was the American that made it to the final. I mean, it’s a stressful situation to be in.
“It’s different from playing the world No 1, who you’re probably not going to be the favourite against.”
Fritz is right, Sinner, already a Grand Slam winner this year, enters Sunday’s clash as the favourite.
But, as the home crowd favourite, Fritz should be given extra motivation to secure his first-ever Grand Slam title at the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium.
