The latest collaboration from & Other Stories, which is with Susan Fang, lands in stores today. The London Fashion Week designer – who is known for her fantastical designs, which are often created with innovative techniques – has designed dresses, separates, shoes and accessories for this collection, which are all inspired by surrealism and the natural world.
Fang launched her label back in 2017, and since then, has been widely recognised by the fashion industry for her talents. The designer has been included in the influential Business of Fashion 500 class of last year, was recognised in Forbes 30 Under 30 for both 2019 and 2020, and was shortlisted for the prestigious LVMH Prize.
“We have great admiration for her designs that seamlessly blend the delicate and the bold,” says & Other Stories’ concept designer, Frida Billegren. “Drawing inspiration from nature and science, she creates dream-like pieces that are both innovative and inspiring.”
Highlights in the collection include a strapless floral midi dress with beautiful 3D embellishment, a pair of bejewelled sandals and a statement choker necklace.
“Nature served as our primary inspiration for this collection, and the idea of creating dreamy statement pieces that can also be worn in your daily wardrobe,” Fang told us. “For me, it’s a collection that ties nature, dreams, and surrealism together through fashion. We added floral elements in all the pieces, some flowers are in the broderie anglaise, some are in the embroidery, and some are made with beads. And we combined floral prints designed by my mother with transparent fabric, so they appear to be floating, giving the wearer a sense of freedom.”
On her favourite piece in the collection, the designer says: “Can I choose them all? I adore the blue floral treasure dress – am so happy with the finish of the laser-cut petals. I wanted to evoke the feeling of sunlight fluttering through leaves, and we did that. The necklace is particularly special because it came from a dream I had about a transparent flower blossoming. I don’t know if transparent flowers exist in the real world, maybe only in a fantasy world. So, I felt I had to create one. It became my 3D-printed flower necklace, initially a showpiece, and now we’ve crafted a less heavy version for & Other Stories, which I love; it’s a creation inspired by fantasy, rendered in reality.”
The designer is the latest name to team up with & Other Stories on a one-off capsule collection, joining the likes of Sindiso Khumalo, Natalia Alaverdian of Awake Mode, Minju Kim and Rejina Pyo, who have all previously worked with the affordable retailer.
