The Kentucky Wildcats knocked off the Florida Gators at Rupp Arena on Saturday afternoon, 106-100.
The No. 10 Wildcats handed the No. 6 Gators their first loss of the season while picking up a victory in their first game of Southeastern Conference play. It was a statement that the beginning of Kentucky’s season wasn’t anywhere close to a “fluke” and that they can hang with what is clearly the best and most stacked conference in the country.
Mark Pope’s team also added a third top-10 win to their resume, with Saturday’s outcome aligning with the team’s victories over Duke and Gonzaga from earlier this season.
While Kentucky has disappointing losses to Clemson and Ohio State on their resume, they’re combatting that by shining in games vs. top teams. Plus, those two defeats were Quad I games, so it’s not like they should hurt Kentucky much.
With SEC play now underway, Kentucky will have plenty of opportunities in the near future to further improve its case to be recognized as one of the top teams in the country.
Road games at Georgia (Tuesday) and at No. 17 Mississippi State (Saturday) await the Wildcats before they return to Lexington to host No. 13 Texas A&M and No. 5 Alabama.
They’ll then head to Vanderbilt before visiting No. 1 Tennessee, hosting No. 23 Arkansas, and traveling to No. 24 Ole Miss. That’s six top-25 games in an eight-game span.
Kentucky is in for several tests over the next month, and with that will likely come quite a bit of knowledge on just how good this team is, as well as how they will fare in different scenarios and environments.
It’s an exciting time to be a part of Big Blue Nation.
