Good morning BBN!
It has been a full sports weekend as we have had the NBA Playoffs, the NHL Playoffs, and the NFL Draft all rolling. It was also a busy weekend in Lexington as Mark Pope and his Kentucky Wildcats staff hosted several transfers for official visits.
One of the key players on campus was St. Mary’s guard Aidan Mahaney. The rising junior came to Lexington after a stop at UCONN, and now the Cats will wait it out to see if he will ultimately end up in the blue and white.
Averaging just over 13 PPG last season for the Gaels, Mahaney would become one of the go-to options on the offensive side of the court and bring a veteran presence to pair alongside Lamont Butler in the backcourt next season.
It appears that this recruitment still has a little bit left to it, but if Pope can pull Mahaney away from Michigan and UCONN, then chalk that up as the first major recruiting win of the new era.
It will be close, but the Cats seem to be in good shape. Let the Aidan Mahaney watch begin.
If you watched UConn over the last two seasons, you’ll notice that their team is a collection of pieces that form an elite unit.
What Pope is doing is similar. Kentucky fans have to remember that a collection of top talent doesn’t always (and mostly doesn’t) equal championships.
