UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak found himself at the center of a fashion storm after sporting a pair of Adidas Samba trainers. Sunak, who has previously faced scrutiny over his fashion choices, expressed regret for the uproar caused by his latest footwear selection.
Sunak issued what was described as a ‘fulsome apology’ to Adidas Samba enthusiasts, acknowledging the controversy surrounding his choice of attire. Defending his fashion sense, the British-Indian PM revealed his long-standing affinity for Adidas trainers, including the iconic Samba model. He said, “I have been wearing Adidas trainers including Sambas – and others, in fact – for many, many years.”
The controversy erupted when Sunak donned a fresh pair of white Adidas Samba trainers during an interview in Downing Street, drawing criticism and ridicule from fashion pundits and online commentators alike. British GQ magazine, in its scathing assessment, remarked that Sunak’s attempt to appear youthful and trendy had backfired, turning a beloved classic sneaker into a subject of derision, Daily Mail reported.
Footwear historian Elizabeth Semmelhack weighed in on the debacle, warning that Sunak’s fashion faux pas could spell trouble for the revered retro trainer, labeling it as potentially ‘the death knell’ for the iconic footwear, the newspaper said. The British Prime Minister’s response, delivered on LBC Radio, sought to address the backlash. He stressed his personal history with Adidas trainers, dating back to a cherished Christmas gift from his brother.
Sunak’s fashion misstep with the Adidas Samba trainers is not an isolated incident but rather part of a series of style controversies plaguing the Conservative leader. Previous incidents include his choice of Timberland boots during a visit to Dover, which overshadowed the intended focus on immigration policy, as well as donning a pair of suede Prada shoes to a construction site, drawing criticism for perceived insensitivity.
Sunak’s penchant for casual wear has also come under scanner, with his preference for American university merchandise and Everlane hoodies attracting both attention and criticism. His fashion choices have frequently sparked online mockery and debate, from his navy blue hoodie worn during diplomatic engagements to his high-priced white leather trainers amid economic challenges.
Critics have not hesitated to lambast Sunak for what they perceive as out-of-touch fashion decisions, with some suggesting that the political figure should ‘act his age’ and refrain from youthful attire. Even during his tenure as Chancellor, Sunak faced ridicule for sporting ‘teenage’ flip-flop footwear.
