Manchester City received an apology from Sky Sports after a comment was made by pundit Tim Sherwood regarding their transfer business. Gillette Soccer Saturday guests were discussing City’s dealings in the January transfer window when a controversial view was made.
The under-performing Premier League side have made three signings already this month. Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis have all arrived at the Etihad Stadium.
It comes with City struggling for form under Pep Guardiola and needing to refresh their squad. However, Sherwood made a comment that referenced the 115 charges City are facing. The club are accused of breaches of the Premier League‘s financial rules. They deny any wrongdoing.
Speaking after an advert break at 3pm, presenter Simon Thomas said: “Welcome back, before we get underway, the whistles going around the country, we had a conversation earlier today in the build up about Manchester City, their transfer business.
“There was a comment made about Man City and the rules. I just want to say that they are absolutely not the views of Sky Sports and we apologise to Manchester City for those comments.”
City are charged with 115 breaches of the Premier League‘s financial rules. A 12-week hearing between the club and the league was held in London last year. Both parties will have the right to appeal the eventual decision, which is expected to be announced in the spring.
The punishments for breaking the Premier League‘s financial rules range from a fine to a points deduction.
City have spent around £126m on improving their squad this month. Forward Marmoush is the club’s most expensive signing of the window, having been acquired from Eintracht Frankfurt in a deal reportedly worth £63m. Defenders Khusanov and Reis have joined from Lens and Palmeiras, respectively.
Guardiola said of his trio of new arrivals: “Vitor is young. He has a huge personality [but he] needs time. If he’s here with us, of course, he can start.
“Khusanov has already settled for the fact that he played in the French league, handling tough, quick, fast players. But he doesn’t speak much English so communication will be one of the situations that we have to deal with.
“Marmoush, I think, will adapt quickly. The [new signings] will make us strong and I’m pretty sure that the club decided these are prospective players for the future, for many years.”
