Looking for holiday inspiration for 2024? Travel expert Simon Calder has shared his best recommendations for this year.
The expert said on TV that Portugal is the ideal destination for Britons looking for value in Western Europe.
With average highs of 29 degrees in summer, Portugal is a fantastic choice for Britons craving warm weather.
According to Post Office Travel Money research, the country is also one of Europe’s cheapest holiday destinations.
Despite Spain’s popularity, its Atlantic neighbour could be the perfect choice for this year’s bargain getaway.
Simon told BBC Breakfast: “I love Lisbon, one of Europe’s most beautiful capital cities and the locations on its western flanks – in particular Cascais, Estoril and Sintra.”
While in Lisbon, explore its historic neighbourhood, Alfama, on foot or grab a drink in the trendy Bairro Alto.
Cascais and Estoril are seaside towns just a short hop from Lisbon while Sintra is famed for its colourful National Palace of Pena.
Simon described Portugal’s Setubal Peninsula as “much less well known, but full of surprises”.
Located just south of Lisbon, the Setubal Peninsula is the ideal spot to escape the crowds at Portugal’s better known beaches.
Simon said: “Do try O Barbas, an amazing seafood restaurant overlooking the Atlantic in Costa da Caparica, the wild windy and atmospheric cape of Espichel; and Setubal itself, a sleepy friendly city.”
Portugal’s second city, Porto has been described as one of Europe’s most walkable destinations and could make an interesting alternative if you’ve already visited Lisbon.
Known for port wine, Porto’s pretty tiled buildings make it the ideal destination for a scenic wander.
Head into the nearby Douro Valley to taste some of the region’s famous wines or take a tour on the river.
