Every shoe collection needs at least two pairs of trainers – one go-with-everything neutral (I’ve been living in these beige and black Puma Palermos), and one more fun, perhaps a colour pop of red or green. But now, after chatting with our fashion editor, Jodie Dunworth, we’re adding a third style into the mix: silver trainers.
Ticking both the versatile and playful boxes, this is one of the key trainer trends to know now, with Jodie championing them as a must-buy for elevating any look, not only this season, but all year long.
‘Silver trainers make a cool alternative to heels for lowkey gatherings during the festive season,’ she says, ‘and they also look great with earthy tones, adding contemporary pizzazz to heritage checks, cosy knits and trusty trenches.’
When searching for your perfect pair, Jodie recommends looking for silver trainers with a high-shine mirror finish, which feels ‘really expensive’. She’s got her eye on the Tb.490 Rife style by Hawaiian shoe brand Alohas, in ‘Shimmer Silver Cream’, for bringing an effortless, directional vibe to her everyday winter wardrobe.
Silver trainers were everywhere during the recent Fashion Month, with the street style set (especially New Yorkers) relying on them as their cool, fashion-forward accessory of choice, along with leopard-print heels and burgundy bags.
The trend arguably began in the summer of 2023, when trainer king adidas teamed up with British designer Wales Bonner and launched a glossy metallic version of their sell-out Samba. It’s nigh on impossible to find a pair of those hero shoes now, though Jodie also loves the collab more widely for its slimmer silhouettes, which feel smarter for styling with wide-leg trousers.
However, there are plenty of similar silver trainers in the shops, waiting to be snapped up. Try the retro adidas SL72s that the A-list likes of Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski have been loving, or Gola’s popular sporty Torpedos.
