Several people were injured, with one seriously hurt, during a shooting at an adult education centre in Sweden. Local media reported that multiple people were killed in the shooting; however, this was not confirmed by police.
One of the injured is the suspected gunman, police said during a press conference this afternoon. Four of those taken to hospital are undergoing surgery to treat their wounds. Police said they were still trying to establish the motive behind the shooting and have not ruled out that there could be more perpetrators.
Police were first called out to Risbergska School in Örebro at around 12.30pm after reports of gunfire. One person trapped inside the school told the Swedish outlet Aftonbladet: “We have heard several shots outside.”
A friend of a teacher at the school told local media that he received a text message after the incident began.
The friend said: “He wrote that automatic weapons were being fired at the school and that they had taken cover in the staff room. Then he wrote that he loved me.”
Ambulances took victims to the University Hospital in Örebro, which cleared its emergency room and intensive care ward as it prepared to receive the injured.
Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the shooting as a “very painful day” for the country, adding that his thoughts were with “those who have been affected and their relatives.”
The police urged the public to avoid the Västhaga area or to stay in their homes following the incident.
“The operation concerns threats of deadly violence. The operation is still ongoing,” they warned.
Authorities have called on people not to go to the local hospital, where the injured were taken.
An information centre was opened where relatives and friends can receive updates and news on the incident.
Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer said the Government is in constant contact with the police and is following the developments closely.
